Budget 2023 Consultations: CBRS Submission to the Department of Finance Canada

In our pre-budget submission to the Department of Finance Canada for Budget 2023, we argue that, “Brain Research Must Be a National Priority for the Social, Health, and Economic Advancement of Canada.”

CBRS, alongside its broad network of stakeholders, recommends the following:

That the Government of Canada make research on the brain and mental health a national priority with targeted investment in a Canadian Brain Research Initiative.

Brain research has the potential to significantly improve the lives of Canadians, given the integral role our brains play in various aspects of life. With more than 7.5 million Canadians living with a neurological or mental health disorder, and Canada being a leader in brain and mental health research, prioritizing brain research is crucial for the nation’s success and well-being.

We appreciate our Government’s science investment approach, which “recognizes the need to balance ongoing investments in fundamental research, which delivers long-term benefits to Canada, with targeted investments that advance the Government’s priorities and respond to the challenges and opportunities facing Canada.” –Minister François-Philippe Champagne (2022)

Canada is well-positioned to lead collaborative brain research efforts, but seizing this opportunity requires a concerted national effort, as facilitated by the Canadian Brain Research Strategy (CBRS) coalition. With a clear vision and strategic plan in place, the time is now for the establishment of a Canadian Brain Research Initiative.
